Carrot & Banana Doggie Treats

I have been looking around for quite a while for a good dog treat/biscuit recipe for our puppy. Ok so she's 4 years old now, & not exactly a "puppy" but I still call her that! LOL

Our fur-baby, Phoenix, is an English Pointer with a sensitive stomach so I wanted something homemade because her poor tummy can't handle store bought treats other than plain old rawhide.

I stumbled upon a great recipe from 17 Apart for Carrot & Banana dog treats & decided to give them a whirl (and use up the carrots & bananas we have before we travel for the holidays - it was a WIN-WIN)!

I used the recipe right from their blog post so I'm only posting my "result" photos here for you. I got about 4 dozen dog bone shaped treats from the recipe without doubling.

NOTES:

  • I used all-purpose flour because I did not have any whole wheat on hand. The next time I WILL make them with whole wheat though as that would be better on her tummy.
  • I used baby carrots (again - what I had on hand) and used about 2/3 of a 1 lb bag in the dough. I cut them into chunks then used the blender to get them much smaller than on the original post (would have just used a food processor but mine broke the other day).
  • I had to add a little bit (1/4 to 1/3 cup) extra flour because the dough ball was too sticky to roll out nicely.
  • The recipe called for 2 or 3 bananas so I used 3 (that didn't make them too soft so you should be ok using that amount).
  • They stated on the posting that they went without the brown sugar for the recipe & I did also. I don't see the need to pump our puppy with sugar!

Overall a TERRIFIC & SIMPLE recipe for dog treats! The bake time & set time (with oven off) were right on point. They are hard but not like rocks where an actual young puppy would hurt their teeth.

Phoenix devoured 3 last night alone! I don't think these will last long in our house!

17 Apart also has an APPLE treat recipe posted that I'm dying to try out next!

    Enjoy!
