2013: OUT with "Resolutions" & IN with "Better Life Choices"!!

Well it's a new year and for most people, that means creating resolutions. But let us be honest here, how many people actually KEEP those resolutions for more than a few days or weeks? On December 31st, 2012, were YOU still working on your 2012 resolutions? Had you accomplished all your goals? Or had you given up MONTHS earlier?

I've never been big on setting resolutions at any point in my life. I've "decided" to lose weight at certain points (not on a new year but just in general) but never followed through on those "goals" either. I'm all about "to-do" lists and checking them off though, so if I could somehow make a goal with milestones to "check off", I think I could manage to achieve some things this year.

With that being said I'm NOT making resolutions! I refuse to call them that because they won't be kept that way. I've decided to make BETTER LIFE CHOICES this year!

My "BETTER LIFE CHOICES" will be in various categories: Faith, Family, Fitness, Finances

FAITH:
  • I am going to go to mass EVERY weekend.
  • I am going to make sure the KIDS to go to mass EVERY weekend.
  • I am going to read them bible stories (from a children's bible/story book that is age appropriate) at least once a week.
  • I am going to re-read the bible (I read it back in High School, but who couldn't use a "refresher" on it?).
  • I am going to re-read "A Course In Miracles" (not exactly Catholic Church endorsed but it was great reading / thinking material when I read it in college and I have a workbook with exercises to go along with it).
  • I am going to try to attend a women's religious workshop this year sometime. Back in Kansas, the post chaplain had a women's "study group" that I tried to join but it was full. I'm hoping to find something similar here.

    FAMILY:
  • I am going to have a "date night" at least twice a month with hubby (even if that just means having an inexpensive / quiet night at home after the kids are in bed).
  • I am going to send "care packages" to my oldest when she's at her dad's.
  • I am going to call my parents at least 3 times per week to check on them.
  • I am going to call each of my siblings at least once a week (no texting) to check on them.
  • I am going to send written letters / cards (no emails/FB messages) to dear friends & distant family every few months so they know I'm thinking of them.

    FITNESS:
  • I am going to take a multi-vitamin regularly.
  • I am going to feed my family more healthy meals (not cutting out ALL "sweets" but using portion control to ensure we're not over-eating).
  • I am going to re-start practicing yoga.
  • I am going to get my knee pain and migraines evaluated by the doctor.
  • I am going to start running again (assuming the doctor gives the ok with my knees).
  • I am going to get the kids outside (weather permitting) to exercise & find something indoors when the weather is bad.

    FINANCES:
  • I am going to improve our budget plan and ensure we stick to it!
  • I am going to meal plan on a more regular basis.
  • I am going to coupon EVERY time I shop.
  • I am going to start using the Ibotta app on my phone to save even more money.
  • I am going to participate in the 52 week savings challenge (save $1 for the week of the year it is - 1st week save $1, week 2 save $2, all the way up to week $52). I'll discuss this more in it's own post.
  • I am going to find something I can do FROM HOME in my "spare time" (because there is just SOOO much of it) that can bring in a little extra income to increase our savings.
  • I am going to set up VIRTUAL savings accounts to divide up savings (all will be kept in a single physical bank account) into long-term, short-term, emergency. This will be set up in Excel.
  • I am going to make our savings AUTOMATIC - either via automatic transfer to savings or monthly paycheck allotment. "If you don't see it - you can't spend it!"

    I'm sure I will come up with many more "Better Life Choices" to go on this list, but this is a great start!
