To paint or NOT to paint...that IS the question!

My fellow military wives know this tale all too well... you've moved into a new house in a new state & possibly a new COUNTRY... AGAIN... probably for the 3rd time in 5 years (or maybe less)...

You turn the key in the lock for the first time & open the front door to find those HIDEOUS, BORING, UGLY white walls staring you down...

It's DECISION TIME! Do you paint them? Do you use pictures / paintings / artwork etc to "cover them up"? A combination of the above?

In the past, I was a "cover them up" kind of girl... Not wanting to get overly "committed" seeing as I didn't think we'd be in one place long enough to enjoy the work involved in painting them...

When we got to Fort Campbell, I decided shortly after we moved in would be THE PERFECT TIME to paint! We'd be here "at least 3 years" before we'd move so I'd really get to ENJOY my efforts...

I think right there when I had that thought is when God & Uncle Sam started laughing to themselves...

Undaunted by their laughter (that I thankfully didn't hear), I purchased gallons of paint and all the necessary supplies & I painted my little heart out... I went to Lowe's (our FAVORITE home improvement store, might I add)...

I let my oldest daughter pick out a BEAUTIFUL teal blue for her bedroom...

I then chose a lovely green for the entry way & living room / dining room combo it led to...

I even let our then 2 year old son pick a vibrant blue for his room... And we painted...

We sat back & admired our handiwork... and just a few mere WEEKS after I finished painting that LAST wall... we got ORDERS! We wouldn't have to report for 9 more months, but they were there... hanging over me like a lead balloon...

Knowing I'd have to paint my precious walls back to their original (& PLAIN) state, I procrastinated the FULL 9 months and just a few weeks ago had to go through the hard work of REPAINTING them back to "housing standard white"...

It. Was. HORRIBLE!

We didn't buy primer (probably my biggest regret)... the guy at the paint store told us we didn't "need" it... but oh did we ever... instead we had to use 3 coats of paint to "HIDE" those once-gorgeous colors we chose... if I had used a base coat of primer I probably could have gone with only 1 or 2 coats of actual paint and saved the cost of about 3 gallons EASY (at $25 a GALLON!)!!

We finished painting them white about 2 weeks before we actually MOVED so I had to stare at those HIDEOUS walls again for a bit... And you might think I'm crazy, but despite the work of painting & then painting them back, after staring at NOTHING for those 2 weeks, I'd have done it all again in a heartbeat!

My husband, on the other hand, has said that I'm not "allowed" to paint housing anymore... (NOTE: when I say "allowed" he actually used that word, but he doesn't mean it how you think... it's not like he's controlling - he just means it was "too much work" - in his eyes - I just wanted to clarify)

Even though he and I discussed it, I would do it all again & probably will... I'm not sure yet if we'll be allowed to in Germany, but you can bet that I'm gonna ask!!!

How do YOU choose to decorate your rooms/walls? Do you paint? Do you hang pictures/artwork? Or do you maybe like a "clean slate" look?

Later Taters!
